Ofelia Luz Moreno

I went out as I came in—on a dark, stormy night. Birds, people, strays—they all took cover, huddling up where it was warm and dry. Clouds rolled in, thunder rumbled, and the rain drummed its fingers on the windows as I took my first breath, and also my last.

Let me tell you this—what you do matters, and what you don’t do also matters. I did all of the right things, did the best with what I was given. I took care of those who were weaker than me. I let others go first. I never looked back, only forward, until there was nowhere left to go.

I was like a great light on the shore—I let my light show others the way. I loved, and in return, I was loved.
